Here, regimental training continued under some notably demanding commanding officers until, in August 1966 he deployed to Vietnam as a member of the Australian Army Training Team - Vietnam (AATTV). His first regimental posting was with 4 th Field Regiment, then at Wacol, on the outskirts of Brisbane. Reaching Australia in 1959 he took a job on a Kimberly cattle station as a jackaroo, like many a 'new chum' before him. Little is known of his early life save that after finishing his schooling he decided to 'travel the world'. Malcolm was born in Bristol in the south west of England on 24th November 1939. So sad that one of the RAA’s characters died without, it seems, any of the various associations being aware of his death. After lengthy research, it was learnt that Malcolm, known to all as Clagg, had died on 2nd February 2019.

It was in December 2020 when an inquiry came to our notice regarding the whereabouts of Malcolm Thomas Rawcliffe Wilkinson. He is a Doctor of Philosophy (Physics UNSW) and is a lapsed Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. John matriculated from Adelaide Boys High School, is a Graduate of the Royal Military College, the Joint Services Staff College and the Australian College of Defence and Strategic Studies. John became a Life Governor of the RAAHS/RAAHC in 1993, and he is Chairman of the History Sub Committee of the RAA Regimental Committee. He conceived and led an ‘Australia Remembers’ project to create the ‘Defence of Sydney Monument’ at North Head. While Director he was Chairman of the Royal Australian Artillery Historical Society. He was Commanding Officer of the 8th/12th Medium Regiment at Holsworthy in 1991-1992 and the Director of Artillery 1993-1995. He currently specialises in implementing improved governance and management of Defence’s total workforce. John served in the Permanent Army from 1968 to 2003, and continues to work as a Reserve Member.
